June 2nd was our last club meeting for the year! I will see you all on Thursday (June 8th) for our Cabrillo Marine Aquarium field trip. Email Ms. Min if you have any last minute questions.
Ms. Min's mom (Sophia) is an avid photographer and took some amazing pictures of the HMS Garden in July 2022. The Ecosystem was thriving, with the birds, butterflies, and cats coming to say hello.
In March (2022) a few 7th graders volunteered to work in the garden. We planted Kale, Chard, Chickpeas, Fava Beans, Beets, Strawberries this week.
Starting to GrOW...
Peach & Plum Tree blossoms are blooming!!
Thomas and Melanie using diapers to create a super-absorbent material to keep plants moist longer. They applied it to the Avocado tree that wasn't getting enough water. It brought it back to life!!
Water fountains & refilling stations 2021-22 HMS was finally able to install these new Water Fountain stations all around campus thanks to the hard work of Mr. Jose (Security) and others.
Back on campus in April 2021 after CLOSE CLOSURE!!! Students that came back were able to restart the HMS Organic Garden.
They planted a bunch of veggies late April: strawberries, peppers, corn, zucchini, & tomatoes.
They also maintained the birdfeeders, composter, and the fruit trees.
Thank you so much for helping out in the garden and can't wait for everything to mature & grow.
On November 22, 2019, Farm Sanctuary's Chloe Fuller came and taught us about what they do at their amazing refuge for factory farm animals. https://www.farmsanctuary.org She used all sorts of mediums to share their stories, including Virtual Reality (VR)
On December 11, 2019, we planted new Organic plants for the new year.
Ms. Danielle also donated a few bags of soil and a peach, guava, and pineapple sage plant.
The eco kids planted: Kale, lettuce, dill, leek, radish, beets, and spinach.
Danielle and Katie also placed food scraps in our Worm Composting bin. This will hopefully create rich, nutritious soil for our garden in a few weeks. Students are also giving our new veggies "liquid kelp" to help them grow strong organically.
What do we do in the Ecology Club you ask?
Here are some of the things we've done for the past 10 years:
